Inside Story: Why Rishabh Pant Was Retired Hurt on Day 1 of the Manchester Test

Rishabh Pant scored 37 runs before retiring hurt in the first innings of the Manchester Test. On day one of the fourth Test against England, which began on July 23, 2025, Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant suffered a serious foot injury. England, leading the five-match series 2-1, won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions at Old Trafford, Manchester.

England made one change, bringing in Liam Dawson for the injured Shoaib Bashir. India made three changes: Sai Sudharsan replaced Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur came in for the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Anshul Kamboj debuted in place of the injured Akash Deep.

India started well, with openers KL Rahul (47) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) putting together a 94-run partnership. After Rahul’s dismissal, Jaiswal and debutant Sai Sudharsan added 26 runs before Dawson dismissed Jaiswal. Shubman Gill soon followed, caught by Ben Stokes for 12.

Rishabh Pant was taken off the field on a medical cart with a bleeding foot.

Pant and Sai Sudharsan steadied India’s innings with an unbeaten 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket, giving the visitors vital momentum. Pant looked in good touch, scoring 37 runs off quick deliveries, including two boundaries and a six, before disaster struck.

During the day’s final session, Rishabh Pant was hit on the foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. Although England appealed strongly for LBW, the umpire turned down the appeal. However, India faced a setback as Pant appeared to be in considerable pain, requiring immediate attention from the Indian physio and medical staff.

An examination revealed significant swelling on Rishabh Pant right toe. In visible discomfort, he was unable to continue and had to retire hurt. He was then taken off the field on a medical buggy for further treatment.

Pant’s injury looked severe, with cameras showing blood streaming from his foot. Ravindra Jadeja came in to replace him at the crease.

Further details about his recent injury are still awaited. This marks Pant’s second injury in the series. In the Lord’s Test, he had hurt his finger and was unable to keep wickets afterward. Dhruv Jurel then assumed the wicketkeeping responsibilities, while Pant kept batting despite the discomfort.
