The Asia Cup 2025 drama shows no signs of ending. Despite India’s victory over Pakistan in the summit clash, ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi remains adamant about personally controlling the trophy. According to PTI, the trophy has been placed at the ACC headquarters, but Naqvi has issued strict instructions that it must not be moved or handed over without his approval.

The BCCI has already announced plans to raise Mohsin Naqvi’s conduct at the ICC, seeking censure or even his removal as an ICC Director. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the Asia Cup title is not Naqvi’s personal property and should be returned to India promptly. A PTI source added, “It remains to be seen what will be the long-term ramifications for the PCB or Naqvi because the BCCI is clear he didn’t have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team.”

The tournament, which concluded on September 28, ended in controversy as India refused to accept the silverware from Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister. The post-match presentation was delayed by almost an hour, ultimately ending prematurely with neither side yielding.

Tensions had been high throughout the eight-team tournament. India and Pakistan faced each other three times, marking the first encounters since the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Hostilities began on September 14 when Suryakumar Yadav’s team refused to shake hands with Pakistan, leading to politically charged gestures during the Super 4s. A verbal clash also broke out between Haris Rauf and Indian players Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, further fueling the controversy.

Mohsin Naqvi’s political statements

Mohsin Naqvi has come under criticism for failing to uphold his duties as ACC chairman, repeatedly making political statements against India on social media. After the Asia Cup concluded, an ACC meeting reportedly saw tempers flare between Naqvi and BCCI representatives, including Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar.

Initially, Naqvi refused to congratulate India on its Asia Cup victory, only doing so after being urged by Shelar. He also avoided discussing the trophy issue. When Shukla and Shelar attempted to raise the matter, Naqvi continued to deflect.

According to standard protocols, the Asia Cup trophy should have been delivered to the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai by now. However, Naqvi has made his position clear: if India wants the trophy, captain Suryakumar Yadav must personally travel to Dubai to collect it from him.
