“The idea actually came from Arshdeep…” – Varun Chakravarthy shares about the trophy-less celebration following Asia Cup 2025 victory

Varun Chakravarthy revealed that it was Arshdeep Singh who suggested celebrating on the podium without the trophy.

After India’s triumph in the Asia Cup 2025 final, Varun Chakravarthy shared that Singh came up with the idea following their five-wicket win over Pakistan on September 28 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The victory, however, sparked controversy when Indian players declined to receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Consequently, the ACC chairman did not hand over the trophy or medals and left the podium with them.

Undeterred, the Indian team went ahead with their celebrations, with skipper Suryakumar Yadav mimicking the act of lifting an imaginary trophy while his teammates joined in. What could have been an awkward moment was transformed into one of joy and pride. Later, several Indian players even shared photos on social media using trophy emojis in place of actual images with the silverware.

“It Was Arshdeep’s Idea”: Varun Chakravarthy on Trophy-Less Celebration After Asia Cup 2025 Final

At a recent awards show, spinner Varun Chakravarthy opened up about the team’s unique trophy-less celebration following the Asia Cup 2025 final, crediting pacer Arshdeep Singh for the idea.

“It was actually Arshdeep’s idea. We were waiting for the trophy, but we all know how that turned out. I was standing there, hoping the cup would appear – we were all waiting. But the only cup next to me was a coffee cup,” Varun Chakravarthy recalled with a laugh.

On the field, Varun Chakravarthy had a stellar tournament, picking up seven wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 6.50. Arshdeep, who featured in just two games, shone particularly in the super over win against Sri Lanka.

The Men in Blue remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning all seven of their games and notably defeating Pakistan on three occasions. Abhishek Sharma, the tournament’s highest run-scorer, was named Player of the Tournament.
