Rohit Sharma Steps Down as ODI Captain, Future Hinges on Performance

Rohit Sharma’s era as India’s ODI captain has officially ended. The 38-year-old was replaced by Shubman Gill ahead of the three-match series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth. With this shift, Rohit’s future in the team comes under scrutiny, and it appears he will need to let his performances speak if he aims to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has not disclosed whether Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli figure into plans for the marquee tournament. However, former Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, a close friend of Rohit, emphasized that the star’s World Cup preparations have been thorough and hopes the management has maintained proper communication with him.

Speaking on Star Sports, Nayar said that meaningful communication “takes time” and involves more than a phone call. He added, “As long as that discussion happened with him, and he agreed to give Shubman Gill a chance while being there in the dressing room to support him, I am all for it. It’s a great decision because you’ve kept Rohit in the loop and entrusted him with helping take this team forward. That’s something he deserves. Shubman Gill was always going to be captain, and he should be, because he’s that kind of player.”

‘Do it right’

Former Indian support staff member Abhishek Nayar emphasized the importance of Rohit Sharma being on the same page as the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Under Rohit’s captaincy, India reached the 2023 World Cup final but fell short against Australia, fueling his desire for another shot at ultimate glory. With both Rohit and Virat Kohli now playing only one format, maintaining form remains a key challenge.

“But for me, there’s just one thing: if you’re going to do it, then do it right. Communication takes time. It’s not a phone call; you sit together and talk it through,” Nayar said.

He added, “When he was working hard, his preparation was to reach the 2027 ODI World Cup and make India proud, which didn’t happen in India. I just hope that communication went well and Rohit is aligned with the selectors and the Indian team management.”
