Sanjay Bangar predicts Indian star capable of surpassing Rohit Sharma’s highest ODI score if he bats 45–46 overs

Sanjay Bangar predicts Indian star capable of surpassing Rohit Sharma’s highest ODI score if he bats 45–46 overs

Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 remains the highest individual score in One-Day International cricket. The innings, played in Kolkata, saw Rohit face 173 balls, hitting 33 fours and nine sixes before being dismissed on the final ball while attempting to surpass Ali Brown’s then List-A record of 268.

Former India coach Sanjay Bangar has suggested that Shubman Gill could be the batter with the potential to break Rohit Sharma’s iconic ODI record. Rohit, the only player to score three double-centuries in ODIs, continues to shine in international cricket despite retiring from T20Is after India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and stepping away from Tests in May 2025.

“If he bats 45-46 overs, he can break it”—Sanjay Bangar believes Shubman Gill can surpass Rohit Sharma’s record

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar has backed Indian Test captain and all-format star Shubman Gill to break Rohit Sharma’s record for the highest individual score in ODIs, which stands at 264 runs. Bangar said the young opener could achieve this if he batted for 45-46 overs.

“Shubman Gill has already scored a double hundred in one-day cricket, so he knows how to handle it. If he bats 45-46 overs, I think he can break the record,” Bangar said on a Doordarshan show.

Gill has amassed 2,755 runs in 55 ODIs at an impressive average of 59.04, including eight centuries and 15 fifties, with a career-best 208 against New Zealand in early 2023.

Rohit Sharma: That 208 came while opening the innings in Hyderabad, where Gill faced just 149 balls, hitting 19 fours and nine sixes, reaching the milestone in 48.3 overs. With this feat, he joined an elite list of Indians—Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan—to have scored double centuries in ODIs.

Bangar also predicts Abhishek Sharma can break Yuvraj Singh’s fastest T20I fifty record

Bangar also expressed confidence that Abhishek Sharma could surpass Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian. Singh had reached his fifty in 12 balls against England during the 2007 T20 World Cup in Cape Town.

“He is my student, and he hits sixes in the same aggressive style,” Bangar explained.

Abhishek has scored 849 runs in 24 T20Is (23 innings) at an average of 36.91 and a strike rate of 196.07. He has two centuries and five fifties, with a best performance of 135 off 54 balls against England at Wankhede Stadium earlier this year.
