According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test and will be available to captain India in the Asia Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav Cleared for Asia Cup, Set to Lead India
All systems are go for Suryakumar Yadav to captain India in the upcoming Asia Cup after the right-handed batter cleared his fitness test. According to The Indian Express, the 34-year-old will now join chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in the selection meeting to finalize the 15-member squad for the T20 tournament, starting September 9 in the UAE. The squad will be picked in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19.
Suryakumar cleared the fitness assessment at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. The India T20I captain had undergone surgery for a lower-right abdomen sports hernia in Munich, Germany, in June and consulted a specialist in the UK following the conclusion of IPL 2025.
In June, Yadav shared an update on Instagram: “Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back.”
A BCCI source confirmed to The Indian Express that Yadav has completed his rehab program and will attend the selection meeting, fully fit to lead India.
Yadav was in stellar form during IPL 2025, scoring 717 runs for the Mumbai Indians, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to surpass 600 runs in a single season for the franchise.
Suryakumar’s smashing form
Following the IPL, the right-handed batter captained Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in Mumbai’s T20 League, scoring 122 runs in five matches. Despite his efforts, the team managed only one win, finishing sixth on the points table.
The Men’s Asia Cup will kick off on September 9, with India playing their first match on September 10. The highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai.
