"I love taking wickets…" — Glenn Maxwell aims to play a key bowling role for Australia in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Glenn Maxwell is set to play a key role for Australia in the T20 World Cup in India next year. Australia’s all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has expressed his intention to contribute significantly with the ball in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held across India and Sri Lanka from February to March.

As a spin-bowling all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell will be an important asset for Australia in subcontinental conditions, which tend to favor spinners. Known as the ‘Big Show,’ he has often chipped in with crucial wickets in white-ball cricket, even when used as a part-time bowler. With the tournament in Asia, Glenn Maxwell role with the ball could shift from occasional spinner to a frontline option.

In the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, the 36-year-old showcased his bowling prowess by taking two key wickets in the second T20I, dismissing vital batters under pressure.

I Love Taking Wickets: Glenn Maxwell

Ahead of the third T20I against South Africa, Glenn Maxwell revealed in a press conference that he could bowl in the powerplay with the new ball during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

“I think in the subcontinent, as a spinner, you might get a bit more out of the new ball early on. The hard seam can grip those dry surfaces, so it’s something we might consider moving forward,” Maxwell said.

“I’m just as surprised as anyone when I take a wicket. I love getting wickets. Anytime I dismiss someone, it’s a thrill. My role in the Powerplay is to do a job, and I’m focused on executing that as best as I can,” he added.

In the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, Maxwell has been batting in the lower order. Previously, in the T20I series against the West Indies, he was tried as an opener. The Australian all-rounder emphasized his goal to remain flexible in the batting lineup.

“I’ve been moving around the order a bit—filling gaps where needed. During the West Indies series, I batted up the order to counter Akeal Hosein, and in this series, I’ve been managing the back end of the innings,” he explained. “I’m trying to play whatever role the team needs and be as adaptable as possible.”

Glenn Maxwell had announced his retirement from ODI cricket in June but will continue featuring in T20Is and franchise leagues worldwide.

The T20I series between Australia and South Africa is currently tied 1-1. Australia won the first game by 17 runs, while South Africa bounced back with a 53-run victory in the second match. The third T20I is scheduled for August 16 at Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns.
