In the first innings of this match, England’s wicket-keeper Jamie Smith played a vital half-century, which also took him past the 1000-run mark in his Test career.
Jamie Smith now holds the joint record for the fastest wicket-keeper batter to reach 1000 Test runs, achieving it in only 21 innings. He shares this record with former South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, who also reached the milestone in 21 innings.
Additionally, Jamie Smith surpassed Jonny Bairstow to become England’s quickest wicket-keeper to 1000 Test runs; Bairstow had done it in 22 innings. For comparison, Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal reached 1000 runs in 22 innings, while Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers took 23 innings each to hit the milestone as wicket-keeper batters.

Jamie Smith delivered a stellar performance with the bat in the Edgbaston Test, despite England’s eventual defeat. In the second match of the series at Edgbaston, Jamie Smith scored an unbeaten 184 in the first innings and followed it up with 88 in the second innings. Unfortunately, his impressive efforts were not enough to prevent England from losing by 336 runs.
