Hardik Pandya Fined for Over-Rate Offence in IPL 2025 Thriller

The BCCI has taken strict action against Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra following a dramatic finish to Tuesday’s rain-hit IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium. Hardik, whose side lost off the final ball, has been fined INR 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate—MI’s second such offence this season.
As per IPL regulations, all other players in the playing XI, including the Impact Player and any concussion substitute, have been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower.
This over-rate violation also had real-time implications during the game. The Mumbai Indians were restricted to only four fielders outside the inner circle in the final over, significantly limiting their fielding strategy as they attempted to defend a revised DLS target.
Nehra fined, too

While Hardik Pandya accepted blame for Mumbai Indians’ dramatic last-ball loss, calling his final-over effort a “crime,” Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra also landed in hot water. Nehra has been fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for conduct deemed contrary to the spirit of the game, as per Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
The BCCI stated that Nehra admitted to the Level 1 offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction, which is final and binding. Although the board did not specify the exact reason, Nehra’s penalty is linked to a heated exchange with on-field umpires during the second rain delay, when restart times repeatedly shifted — from 12:09 AM to 12:25 AM and then to 12:30 AM — despite clear skies.
