Gulbadin Naib has been named in Afghanistan’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Ahead of Afghanistan’s crucial match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on September 18, Naib, the team’s experienced all-rounder, praised the Indian cricket team, calling them the best side in Asia and arguably the world. This match is vital for Afghanistan as they aim to secure a spot in the Super Four stage.
India, having already defeated Pakistan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Group A, have confirmed their place in the Super Four. Their next fixture against Pakistan is set for Sunday, September 21.
Since making his international debut in 2011, Naib has been a key player for Afghanistan. He has appeared in 89 ODIs and 78 T20Is, scoring 1,332 runs and taking 74 wickets in ODIs, while accumulating 986 runs and 35 wickets in T20Is.

Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib praised Team India, calling them the strongest side not just in Asia but in the world. He said that playing alongside Indian Premier League (IPL) stars has always been a learning experience for him.
“India is the best team in Asia and in the world. You learn a lot from these players. I have shared the dressing room with them in the IPL, and every match we’ve played against them has been a great experience. In T20 cricket, it’s hard to label any team as the favourite; the team that performs on the day will win. But on paper, India is the best,” Naib told ANI.
Afghanistan’s journey in Asia Cup 2025 has been a rollercoaster. They recorded a dominant win over Hong Kong but suffered a narrow loss to Bangladesh, putting their qualification hopes in doubt. Naib highlighted the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.
“In T20s, a single player can turn the game around—whether it’s someone from the top order, middle order, lower order, or a spinner. On their day, any player can influence the match. T20 cricket is entertainment cricket, and every player wants to do something for their country,” Naib added.
With two wins from two games, Sri Lanka tops the Group B table. Afghanistan sits third with one win and one loss. If Afghanistan beats Sri Lanka in their final group match, all three teams could end up with two wins each, and net run rate would decide the standings.
