West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has publicly addressed the serious rape and sexual assault allegations involving a men’s national team cricketer for the first time. Reported by Caribbean news outlet Kaieteur News, at least 11 women—including a teenager—have accused the player of rape, sexual assault, or unwanted sexual advances. Some complaints have reportedly been filed with law enforcement in Guyana, with claims that attempts were made to suppress the matter.

Speaking ahead of the second Test against Australia in Grenada, Daren Sammy emphasized the importance of justice and due process. “One thing I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served. However, there’s a process. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to make sure that due process and the right system are followed. As a cricketing board, and for me as the head coach, I want justice for everyone,” he stated.

Though the accused player’s identity remains undisclosed, the allegations have rocked the Caribbean cricket community, casting a shadow over the ongoing high-profile home series against Australia.

Sammy also revealed that he has been actively communicating with the team to ensure players stay focused and mentally balanced amid the media storm. “We are all aware of what’s been going on in the media. I am very close to my players. I’ve had conversations with them, making sure their mental space is good,” he added.

Tight-lipped on board’s role

When directly asked whether Cricket West Indies (CWI) should launch its own investigation into the sexual assault allegations against a national team cricketer, head coach Daren Sammy chose not to comment. “I can’t answer that,” he said. “I’m pretty sure they are doing all they can to make sure, like I said, the right process is followed.”

Reports indicate that multiple women have come forward with allegations, including at least one family claiming a sexual assault occurred on March 3, 2023. Supporting evidence such as screenshots, voice notes, and medical documents have reportedly been submitted as part of official complaints.

The controversy continues to overshadow the ongoing Test series, with the accused player’s identity yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, public calls for greater transparency and accountability from Cricket West Indies are intensifying.
