Kohli officially retired on May 12, following a report that he had already informed the BCCI of his choice despite their efforts to change his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to fan theories suggesting Kohli was forced out\u2014especially after he returned to play Ranji Trophy following a poor series in Australia\u2014Ganguly clarified that legends like Kohli always know when to step away. \u201cEveryone says why. I know he didn\u2019t have the best five years in Test cricket, but champions rediscover. He felt it was time to go,\u201d Ganguly told PTI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing parallels with his own retirement at 37, Ganguly explained that though he was in top form in 2006\u201307, the time felt right as India looked ahead to younger talent for the 2011 World Cup.
